Dress Code Policy

Cesar Chavez does not require school uniforms; however, students are expected to dress appropriately for an academic setting. In addition, we encourage our students to freely express themselves as they feel comfortable, and in doing so, we expect that those choices are made mindfully and respectfully. The following guidelines will help when planning your daily outfits:
Prohibited Attire
  • Clothing displaying profanity, drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products; violent messages; sexual messages; gang symbols or references; or language that demeans an identifiable person or group are not allowed
  • Undergarments must not be visible when walking, sitting or standing.
  • Jewelry that is perceived as dangerous, violent or promoting inappropriate themes. Heavy chains, bracelets, and necklaces that have spikes are not allowed to be worn in the building.
Hats and Headgear
  • Hats, Hoodies, and Non-religious headgear, including skullcaps and ski masks, are not allowed to be worn in the building.
Shirts
  • Midriff shirts, muscle shirts, blouses, or tops that allow skin to be exposed either on the upper torso or the back are not allowed. Tops with spaghetti straps, tube tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, and colored or white tank tops must be worn as undergarments only. A sweater, shirt, or jacket must be worn over such items at all times.
  • No tank tops, low-cut necklines, off-the-shoulder shirts, strapless, or body-tight spandex tops may be worn alone. Shirts must cover the shoulders, back, front, and midriff area.
  • Transparent or see-through clothing is not allowed.
Pants:
  • Pants must be secure at the waist at all times. Pants may not be worn low so that they show undergarments or skin or look as if they are about to fall off.
  • Distress or torn pants are not allowed to be worn.

Shorts, skirts, and dresses:
  • Shorts, skirts, and dresses must be at knee length.
  • Slits in shorts, skirts, and dresses must not extend higher than mid-thigh.
Shoes:
  • Closed-toe shoes must be worn at all times. Slides, sandals and open-toe shoes are not allowed.
Policy for Violations of the Dress Code
If a scholar violates the Dress Code Policy, the scholar will be:
  • Stopped at the front door and given the option to change his/her clothes.
  • Given the option of calling his/her parents/ guardians for a change of clothes to be brought to the school. Students will remain in ISS until they receive a change of clothes.
The parent/guardian of any scholar refusing to follow the dress code policy will be called, and appropriate consequences will occur, including and not limited to a dress code debit, detention, or In-School Suspension.

This policy applies during the school day and at all school-sponsored events, unless otherwise stated.
