Chavez students continue to beat the odds
While many people – including certain presidential candidates – may underestimate the drive, intelligence and resilience of minority students in Washington, D.C. and beyond, we never do. That’s why it was refreshing to see Colbert King’s recent op-ed in the Washington Post, in which he acknowledged the brilliance found in minority communities right here in our nation’s capital. King also delivered an inspiring commencement speech at our Capitol Hill campus earlier this month and gave our students a shout-out in this thought-provoking piece.
“If last year’s high school graduation numbers are any guide,” he wrote, “the Chavez students will be joined by more than 3,000 other D.C. high school students who received diplomas this spring. Many of them will also continue their education. They aren’t victims. They are spirited.”
