THESIS OVERVIEW

In order to empower Chavez Scholars to create a more just, free, and equal world, Chavez Schools aligns curriculum to the following Public Policy Framework:

  • Scholars must understand the founding principles of the United States
  • Scholars use that understanding to take action in their community
  • Scholar actions develop a belief in their capacity to affect change

The Thesis Course at Chavez Schools is the culmination of their academic career and encompasses all three components of the Public Policy Framework.

THESIS COURSE

Chavez scholars are required to complete a year-long Thesis course, which incorporates the Public Policy Framework in the following manner:

  • Scholars build understanding of a current, relevant public policy issue of their choice through research and collaboration with a policy professional, or Thesis Advisor, who ensures they evaluate the issue in the context of the United States Constitution
  • Scholars take action related to their public policy issue by engaging in an advocacy campaign or project with an organization working on this issue in the civil sphere
  • Scholars develop a belief in their capacity as change-agents by writing a 15-20 page Thesis paper, which advances the work of their Thesis Advisor, and presents their research before a panel of public policy makers, thinkers, and leaders
